Impact of Borax on Human Health
Consumption of borax-contaminated food is health hazard.
The acute effects are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, with delayed effects of skin redness and peeling. 15 grams of borax for adults and 5 grams for children can cause hematemesis (blood vomiting) and death.
Accumulation of borax is suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child. Birth defects include brain and skeletal abnormalities and infertility of male offspring. Animal ingestion studies in several species, at high doses, indicate that borax causes reproductive and developmental effects. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, animal studies have shown that boric acid has an affinity for male testicles. Poisoning produces inflammation and atrophy of tubules and lowers sperm count. Repeated low dose exposure borax used as a food preservative in noodles, steamed rice, caviar and meatballs, has been implicated in cases of liver cancer over five to ten years.
Borax has been banned as a preservative for food in the United States and many other countries, but they are still used illegally.
The test kit can be easily used outside the laboratory with fast and reliable result. |

Consumption of Urea-contaminated food is health hazard. Elevated urea levels in human body can cause congestive heart disease, urinary obstruction, gastrointestinal disorders, as well as renal disease; and may also be an indicator of dehydration, starvation, or shock.
Urea has been banned as food preservative in Vietnam, but it is used illegally for fishes to keep them fresh. Urea is often added in fish sauces, milk, feedstuffs to increase total nitrogen number. It is also used in
fermentation of alcoholic beverages.
The use of urea in
fermentation of alcoholic beverageis hazardous. Ethyl Carbamate (Urethane)produced in a reaction between urea and ethanolis the Grade-2 carcinogen – known to produce cancer in primates, recently regraded to the same level of threat as Arsenic and Mercury).
Urethane levels in alcoholic beverages and the use of urea in fermentation have been of great concern to health agencies and food safety agencies worldwide since the mid 1980’s. The use of urea in fermentation has been banned in many countries.

| Why quantify nitrite in processed meats?
A link between eating processed meats (ham, bacon, pastrami, salami, hot dogs, sausages) and cancer risk is suggested according to a study by the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii and the University of Southern California. The study followed 190,000 people, of ages 45-75, for seven years and found that people who ate the most processed meats had a 67% higher risk of pancreatic cancer than those who ate the least amount.
Processed meats are manufactured using sodium nitrite. During the process of cooking certain meats, sodium nitrites combine with naturally present amines in the meat to form carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds. When ingested, these compounds are associated with cancer, according to the study.
